So here I am again, immersed in the world of bingo chat room acronyms, BTW I hope you saw parts one and two. No? then SOY (Shame on you!).
A lot of the acronyms in everyday use the "8" as shorthand for the letters or sound "ate". So CUl8R is "see you later", while BBM8 is "bye-bye mate". Other letters can be used for their sound, such as "X" instead of "ecks". I'm going to run some chX "checks". "4" is used instead of "for", so ?4U is" here's a question for you". A plain "?" is just that .. "what?" Or "eh?" Or "come again squire, I don't understand what on earth it is that you're blathering on about!"
One I got caught out on was GF and BF. Very popular on the social networks. I was asked if I had GF. I assumed it meant Gastric Flu, Gone Fishing. They then said "no no.. have you got a GF?" I said "Giant Frog?" "Glowing Fire?" Then the penny dropped! GF- Girlfriend and BF- Boyfriend!
Sometimes when people are chatting away on a particular theme, they stray off into other topics, or lose the thread of the original conversation. You can then warn someone by indicating that they are going OT... "off topic". BOT therefore equals "back on topic".
One to use if you're saying something but are not sure if you are right is CMIIW- "correct me if I'm wrong".
One to use with caution is CWOT- "complete waste of time". Best not to use that when talking about a person, and it may be a bit rude even if talking about a particular chat.
One I've seen used is EAK- "eating at keyboard". I'm not sure in what circumstances you would be using that one? Maybe if you're being as bit slow in replying perhaps?
If you've found someone you have a rapport with in a Bingo chat room, then if you know they live not too far away, you could suggest to them that you meet them F2F- "face to face".
For expressions of exasperation, you could try GAL- "get a life!", FCOL-"for crying out loud", HOAS- "hold on a second!" NOYB- "none of your business!", OMG- "oh my gosh!", WE- "whatever!". Remember to use these sparingly- and perhaps follow them up with a smiley or a LOL if you don't want them to be taken seriously!
In the next and final part we'll look at nice things to say, and a method I use to check whether anything I'm typing into a chat room conversation may cause offence!
Be good and be lucky!
