How's Your Luck? (part 2)

We already know that the numbers are random, and that the chances you have of winning are affected by the number of cards you play with, and the number of other cards in play. How can you tip the odds in your favour to try to get a win?

In land-based live bingo, some halls advertise a guaranteed amount for a win at a particular session. Now that’s interesting because that sum is not affected by the number of people taking part. If there are loads of people, then the chances of winning that big advertised prize is low, but if there are few people there, your chance increases. Since odds depend on the number of cards in play in a game, a poorly attended game can be good for your chances of winning. There's less competition for the jackpot, and, legally, bingo halls have to award the prizes they advertise regardless of how many people show up. So it may be good to avoid the crowds and try to struggle there on days where the transport is bad, it’s cold and miserable, or there’s a big soccer match in television keeping the men away, or a Strictly Come Dancing of X-Factor final on television!

My Mum always used to say that you should buy as many cards as you can handle at a time, without breaking the bank. This way, you'll increase your chances to win. If you don’t play that often, then why be stingy? Splash out, and provided you can keep your eyes and brain keenly focused on the cards you have, you’ll have a greater chance of winning. Of course, if you are using the auto-daub feature online, then you needn’t worry about keeping abreast of all your cards and numbers being called- it’s all done for you. You won’t miss out on a win by not concentrating!

Needless to say, although you increase your chance of winning by buying more cards, your outlay is greater, and therefore at the end of the evening, even with a small win, you may find you’ve barely broke even. It’s really up to you to find a level you feel comfortable with, and that suits your pocket. Let’s not forget that every single card in play in every single game has an equal chance of getting Bingo.

Another tip my Mum used to give was to choose nonduplicate Bingo cards: Since no bingo card features any number more than once, every single card has the same odds of winning a game. Some players, however, believe that they can maximize their chances of winning by choosing cards that don't duplicate the numbers they already have on other cards. In choosing cards with different numbers, they are hoping at least one of their cards will feature the number called. This can be quite fiddly in practice, and personally I can’t be bothered with that!

Finally, a tip that you may see as being a little bit hippy-dippy and out-there. But good things seem to happen to people who don't dwell on the bad. No one knows why. Some says it’s something called “The Law of Attraction” others the power of positive thought. But some people do claim that if they create enough positive energy waves and karma, it can attract good things, and make them luckier. Sceptical? Well, it costs nothing to give it a go, and if you do have a big win through thinking positively, that’s great. And if you have a big win without it... well that’s great also!  Good Luck!
